Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) Therapy

Helping your nervous system feel safer and more regulated.

What is the Safe & Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is often used to support individuals experiencing chronic stress, trauma-related responses, sensory sensitivities, ADHD, or challenges with emotional regulation.

It is a listening-based intervention that supports the nervous system through specially filtered music. By listening through headphones, the program gently helps the brain and body become more comfortable with sound while supporting emotional regulation, attention, and social connection.

SSP is based on Polyvagal Theory, which helps explain how our nervous system responds to stress and safety. When the nervous system is able to feel safer and more regulated, it becomes easier to focus, connect with others, and respond to challenges in everyday life.

SSP involves listening to specially filtered music through headphones while working with a trained provider.

We offer the Safe and Sound Protocol for children, teens, and adults in Huntersville, Cornelius, and surrounding communities, with options for in-person or remote support.

The listening program typically involves five hours of music, which can be completed gradually over a period of time based on each person’s needs and response to the program.

Who It Helps

The Safe and Sound Protocol can be especially helpful for individuals whose nervous systems tend to stay on high alert or feel easily overwhelmed by everyday experiences.

This may include children, teens, or adults with:

  • Sensory sensitivities

  • Anxiety or chronic stress

  • Trauma or PTSD responses

  • Sensory processing differences

  • ADHD and attention challenges

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Social engagement challenges

For many individuals, these experiences are connected to how the nervous system responds to safety and stress. SSP works to gently support the nervous system so that regulation, attention, and social connection can become easier over time.

Rather than focusing on “fixing” behaviors, this approach helps create the conditions where the nervous system can feel safer, more flexible, and better able to engage with the world.
