Lego Social Skills Group
The Lego Social Skills Group provides a structured and engaging environment where children can practice social communication, cooperation, and problem-solving with peers. Through collaborative Lego building activities, children work together as a team while learning how to navigate social interactions in a supportive and playful setting.
Many children who participate in the group experience challenges related to social communication, emotional regulation, or navigating peer relationships. The group offers an opportunity to practice these skills in a way that feels natural, interactive, and fun.
How the Group Supports Social Development
Our Lego Social Skills Group is based on Lego-based therapy, an evidence-informed approach that helps children practice communication, cooperation, and flexible thinking through collaborative building activities.
Children often learn social skills most effectively when they are actively engaged with peers in meaningful activities. The Lego group provides a structured framework that encourages communication, teamwork, and flexibility while children work toward a shared goal.
During each session, participants work in small teams to complete a Lego building project. Each child takes on a specific role within the team and rotates through different responsibilities over time.
These roles help children practice:
Communicating clearly with peers
Listening and responding to others
Cooperating within a group
Managing frustration when challenges arise
Giving and receiving feedback from teammates
Through these experiences, children begin to develop greater confidence in social situations while strengthening skills that can carry over into school, friendships, and family interactions.
Why Lego-Based Therapy?
Lego-based therapy was originally developed by Dr. Dan LeGoff as a way to support children who experience social communication challenges. By using a structured building activity, children are naturally encouraged to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve together.
The shared focus of building a project helps reduce pressure during social interaction while still providing meaningful opportunities to practice important skills.
Program Structure
The Lego Social Skills Group is designed for children ages 9–11 who may benefit from additional support with social communication, social skills, and peer interaction.
The program includes an initial intake session and six weekly group sessions that last about 75 minutes. The therapist will have a check-in session with parents halfway through the program, and again at the end.
Depending on space and availability, a child can continue the program to strengthen their skills and (of course) have fun.
The group is offered in-person at our Cornelius office.
